When Should Rescue be Attempted?
Deciding to attempt a rescue operation is based on 3 factors: the risks involved for the rescuer, greatest good for the greatest number, & the resources and manpower available. Although FSR is mostly for human rescue operations, the same principles can be applied to animal situations; refer to the figure below for an example.
- For example, the risk involved here are the rangers being injured by other predators in the swamp or aranger potentially drowning
- The rescources and manpower available her are four rangers and their bare hands, which is enough to lift an elephant out of the river
- The rangers are doing the greatest good for the greatest number because they are keeping each other safe, while also keeping the victim safe
